We've all heard the saying "as American as apple pie", right? So I suppose that's why it's imperative that it be present at your 4th of July cook out. Pies can be tricky but don't let that scare you. Yeah, I know Costco makes a pretty mean apple pie and it's really so easy to pick one up when you stop there on July 3rd and load your cart with enough beer and beef to feed a small country. But a homemade apple pie with stars and stripes is ever so much prettier and all your neighbors will be jealous that you have a flag pie and they just have the regular, old Costco pie.
If you really want to delve deeper into pie making read our post from November full of tips and tricks found here.
You will need:
1 8" pie plate
1 pie crust, our recipe found here
6 cups of tart apples, peeled and sliced (That's roughly 5 whole apples, and we use a mix of tart (Granny Smith) and sweet (Jazz, Gala, etc)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 Tablespoons butter
Preheat oven 400F.
Peel and slice your apples. Toss in a big bowl with the cinnamon and sugar and set aside.
Next, follow our instructions on the pie crust page to prepare your crust.
Once half of the dough is rolled out, place it in the pie plate and dump the apples in, dotting with the 2 tablesppons of butter. Next, roll out the second half of the dough and begin decorating the top of the pie any way you like.
Star cut outs and stripes are a fun idea but there are other ways you can do it as well. Get creative.
Brush the crust with egg wash and place in the oven. Bake on 400F for 15 minutes then turn the oven down to 375F and bake an additional 45 minutes. If the edges begin to burn cover them with foil.
